PEACH
(Prunus Persica)
The peach has been native to China since 3,000 years ago a.J.C. From there it went to Persia. Its Latin name Prunus persica, comes precisely from Persia, from the route that was created between China and Persia.
It is known that in the year 330 a.J.C. its consumption was extended to Greece and until the Middle Ages it did not arrive to Europe.
It belongs to the Rosaceae family and in turn to the Prunus genus. It needs a temperate climate to grow without problems, because it does not withstand the cold well.
Spain is the 2nd largest producer of peaches, behind Italy. The 20% of the harvest is destined to the industry, to make juices, canned fruits, yogurts...The main peach producing countries are: China, Italy, USA, Spain, Greece, France.
