BANANA
(Musa cavendishii)
Banana, Plantain, Banana, Bananas, Bananas, Bananas, Bananas, Cambur, Guineo, Platanera, Platanero

plátanosThe Plantain is native to Asia: It arrived to the Mediterranean coasts in the year 650 and to the Canary Islands in the 15th century. From the Canary Islands it reached America in 1516, where it was renamed banana and became one of the staple foods of tropical and Caribbean countries. With the variety of plantains (they are cooked, less sweet and larger) they accompany almost all their dishes (like rice for Asians). In Europe, on the other hand, we eat bananas raw (dwarf banana), as a dessert. From the Canary Islands it starts to be marketed from the end of the 19th century.

The Plantain belongs to the family of the Musaceae, which includes the family of the Musa Paradisiaca or male Plantain and the Dwarf Plantain or Banana(Musa x paradisiaca). It needs a warm and humid climate to grow perfectly.

The main banana producing countries are the tropical and Caribbean countries of South America and, to a much lesser extent, Southeast Asia

If you buy a little green can be left in a cool place without direct light, until ripe.

Bananas can be frozen for up to two months.

Contrary to popular belief, it is not bad to keep it in the refrigerator, only that the skin turns brown, but nothing happens to the fruit.

It is an exquisite and delicious fruit, but few people eat it because of the amount of calories it has.

Because of its caloric and vitamin content, it is recommended for children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, athletes and the elderly.

Exquisite desserts are made with bananas and also some other dishes in which bananas are a component. Such is the case of Arroz a la Cubana, consumed in all Spanish homes and much loved by children.
